A is for amphitheatre or arena. Arena means sand in Latin, and the amphitheatres were called arenas because of their sand bottoms. In Italian, arena is used in the singular (l'Arena); in French in the plural (les Arènes). The Romans built arenas to stage entertainment as part of the larger cities all over the Empire, starting in the first century.
