A day with Janice and Pierre
- We took the Metro to meet Janice (L's colleague) and Pierre (her husband) by the Pompidou Centre, after an espresso at what turned out to be the edge of an Asian section. There were Chinese shops nearby, and the guys hanging out at the next cafe may have been speaking Vietnamese. J and P were finishing their cafe au lait, so we joined them for a quick one. You can't have too much caffeine when you're jet lagged.
- We strolled past Notre Dame to the Latin Quarter, on the Left Bank. P gave us some commentary, since he went to school in that area. One interesting thing was an outdoor market on Rue Mouffetard, with fresh food (hot, cold, and raw), household goods, and a bit of this and that.
- We had a good waitress, with a sense of humor, at lunch. We joked with her about "bizarre men" — P's drink that she never heard of, C's question about ortolans (birds eaten whole (C thought they were alive, but apparently not) while the diner's head is draped with a napkin; Mitterand supposedly ate two for his last meal. Nobody else had heard of this.)
- We wanted to see Les Arènes de Lutèce, the remains of the the Roman amphitheature, so J and P took us by there. Then we went to the Musée de Cluny, which has the famous tapestries of the woman with a unicorn (J had never been there), as well as Roman baths/spa, and interesting game pieces, including large ones for backgammon.
- There happened to be a display of photographs of West Africa, sponsored by a non-profit organization, outside the Jardins Luxembourg.
- No nap! Must stay awake...
- No dinner — too full!
