"We're on our way home / We're going home"
- We got up early (6:00), but not as early as in Arles. The hotel clerk made us espressos while the cab was coming, even though the breakfast area wasn't open. She also gave us a couple pastries for the road.
- We were at the airport by 6:45. There were no problems checking in or getting through security. We saw an older couple with luggage labeled Port Alberni (on Vancouver Island), but they were headed to Vancouver, same as us. We also saw a woman whose luggage tags said Khartoum. She was wearing nice jewelry, which was a striking contrast with what is going on in Sudan.
- The Frankfurt airport is not exciting, though not as bad as sometimes. Got some chocolate for Vancouver J (she won't be on her diet forever) and a sandwich for lunch. There was a long wait to board after we had gone through boarding pass control, which was after they cleared out the waiting passengers from the area they were going to go back into. So much for German efficiency.
- There was a loud screaming kid while we were waiting to taxi, and a different one as we descended to land. We didn't get much sleep on the flight. The meal service was slow, and they ran out of the pasta option less than half-way through our cabin. We are not in Italy anymore.
- We were back home by 3:45.
- After a quick e-mail "We're back" we head out to try to stay awake until a reasonable hour.
- We wouldn't want to go cold turkey, so we went to a favorite cafe for espresso, then to a North American-style bar for (expensive) aperitivos, and a "passagiatta" (stroll) along English Bay before gelato.
- We picked up some groceries on our way home, and managed to stay awake until 10:00 (success!) watching a Katharine Hepburn movie and a documentary about Amelia Earhart. We ended up going to sleep about the same time as last night, though with a 9 hour time difference, so 33 hours later!
